The LCA2015 Delegate Wiki is embedding interactive maps directly onto wiki pages, to make it more convenient for delegates to find relevant locations without having to leave the wiki. This facility is provided via the [[mw:Extension:Maps|Maps]] Extension for MediaWiki.

Given that the '''Stardome Planetarium Observatory''' is situated handily close to the University of Auckland venue for LCA2015, I thought we'd organise an Astronomy BoF again this year to complement the Astronomy Miniconf.
Our hacking on the Maps extension so far has shown that without the added support of the full [[mw:Extension:Semantic_MediaWiki|Semantic MediaWiki]] (SMW) installation, the Maps extension works sufficiently, but only with Google Maps. To enable the full featureset of the Maps extension would require installing SMW, which seems extreme for what we need here. While the openness and freedom of OpenStreetMap would be more in keeping with the ethos of Linux and the LCA, minimalism is also a lofty goal.

We are mainly using the '''<nowiki>{{#display_map:}}</nowiki>''' method of the extension, and it requires at least one location as a parameter, which can be passed either as an address or coordinates.

Given that the Stardome Planetarium Observatory is situated handily close to the University of Auckland venue for LCA2015, I thought we'd organise an Astronomy BoF again this year to complement the Astronomy Miniconf.

Stardome has a gallery/exhibits, and runs a planetarium show on the summer night sky at 8pm. After the planetarium show, there is telescope viewing available which included amateur-grade telescopes in the courtyard, or the option of viewing through the Zeiss 0.5m telescope for a small extra fee.

Please feel free to update this page to include/suggest other options.
