Sounds very interesting. However, I have a retrun flight from Auckland. Making the whole return trip on Saturday - Sunday seems a bit too much of travelling and it's not particularly cheap either. So I looked a bit at the map and the schedule. Looks like just going to National Park / Ohakune on Staturday and return from there on Sunday might be a more suitable distance and price. Does anybody have opinions whether that's worth doing or would it mean to miss 80% of the sights? --Uwe Geuder (talk) 08:57, 13 December 2014 (AEDT)

You won't miss anything like 80% of the sights - for example, the Raurimu spiral is passed by the Northern Explorer just before reaching National Park if I read the maps right. Changing the return flight to Wellington might be another option if the fees are not too excessive. If you can stomach the takeoff from Wellington, that is (not as bad as arrival into the airport, but can be quite spectacular). --Michael Schmitz (talk) 06:43, 16 December 2014 (AEDT)

Wasn't there and Alfred Hitchcock movie called 'Strangers on a Train'? I hope there's no murder plots involving getting a fellow passenger to kill somebody...
